Porto — the guide locals would write.

Porto is the underrated Portuguese capital — older, denser, and quieter than Lisbon. The Douro splits it from Vila Nova de Gaia (the port-wine side). The trick is to embrace both banks, eat heavy at lunch, and follow locals out of Ribeira after sunset.

Best time to visit: April–June, September · Avg. trip: 2–3 days · Currency: EUR

Why people fall for Porto

Porto is small. The historic center is walkable end-to-end in 25 minutes. Add the Gaia side and you have everything in an hour's walking radius. No metro needed for most trips.

It's also one of Europe's best food cities for the price. €10 buys you a francesinha that ruins all sandwiches forever. €5 gets you a bottle of port. Lean in.
